They found Julian’s discarded phone under the guard rail near the Elm Avenue exit—he’d hung up on Manny and tossed it out the window. The screen was cracked. Manny bagged it and passed it to a technician.

Marshal Warren turned in a circle, glaring at the towers and windows on the western side of the highway. He spoke loud over the rush of passing cars. “Why the hell’d he call you, Manny?”

Manny was wearing the black Marshal windbreaker and it rustled in the slipstream. Arms crossed. “To bring us here.”

“To this spot?”

“Here’s what I think. Julian can’t find us at night, cause we’re hiding. So he waits to find us in the morning, but we didn’t go into the office, so he was stumped. Instead, he called us and led us here. He’s nearby, watching. Now we’re here, he can follow us.”

“Well,” said Warren. He squinted against the sun. “Sneaky bastard.”

Mackenzie August was parked behind them, his car angled to cut off the nearest lane. Traffic wasn’t bad enough to back up.

Manny was talking to himself, staring absently at the reflection in a thousand windows. Beck moved closer to hear his thoughts. “Julian can’t follow us home at night, because we’re taking precautions, because we’re careful. Because he’d be spotted. So he waits for the morning. He doesn’t know where we sleep, but he knows where the marshal’s office is. But now, the whole city is looking for him. He lost his anonymity. Gotta work in the shadows now. Pick his spots…"

“I swear, this guy, this one man, is causing me more grief than anybody who ever came to Roanoke since you, Deputy Martinez,” said Warren.

Manny’s eyes unfocused, staring through the city.

“Kill the girl first.” Quiet words. “Demonstrate his superiority, his machismo. He went after Mavis… Hmm.”

“Hmm what?” said Warren.

“You know what I got?”

“What’s that?”

“I got an idea, señor.”

“It’s about damn time,” said Warren.

“Julian wants to kill a marshal.”

“Yeah, so?”

“So, let’s give him one.”
